Plumbers on the Tighes Hill run

Plumber Tighes Hill

Tighes Terrace runs down toward the old tram bridge. The cottages along it carry some of the oldest pipework in Newcastle: sewer runs laid when the tram line reached the suburb in 1894 still serve parts of Tighes Hill, and the earthenware sections let go one collar at a time beneath the front gardens.

Mayfield is our home turf, and this cottage grid sits on the same regular run, a few streets over the creek.

At the last census, the suburb counted 1,801 people across 683 dwellings, and 86.5 per cent of them were separate houses, nearly all pre-1940 weatherboard, brick and fibro stock. That housing is the whole plumbing story here.

What the cottage grid does to pipes

The ground slopes toward Throsby Creek on both sides, leaving the lower streets resting on damp alluvium where trenches hit water fast. The leafy streets that make the place desirable, especially around Elizabeth Street Reserve and the garden figs, feed roots straight into cracked drainage lines.

  • Galvanised supply lines choked with decades of rust, so the bathroom at the back of the house barely gets a trickle
  • Clay sewer joints that crack, drop and snag paper until they are relined
  • Old gas lines abandoned when cottages switched away from gas lighting, which have to be traced and capped before a reno proceeds
  • Flexi hoses in newer bathroom renos corroding fast in the salt-laden air

Services we cover in Tighes Hill

Wherever the job sits, the route starts with the hubs:

Specific jobs route straight through: blocked drains when a gully gurgles, leak detection when a damp patch spreads across cottage floorboards, and hot water repair when a winter shower runs cold.

Why choose us on this run

$0 Call Out

Quote First, Always

The price is agreed before a tool comes out. What you approve is what you pay.

Licensed Local Plumbers

Every job is done by licensed plumbers who work Tighes Hill and the surrounding Hunter suburbs week in, week out.

Made Right, No Questions Asked

If something isn't up to standard, we come back and make it right. No arguing, no fine print.

The TAFE campus forms the suburb's western side, and the tightly-built streets around it load the stormwater system fast in summer downpours, so we plan drainage work around what the cloudbursts do, not just what the pipes look like on a quiet day.

Questions from around the cottage grid

Do you charge a call out fee for Tighes Hill jobs?

No. Every job starts with a $0 call out and a written quote before any work begins, whether it is a blocked drain or a hot water unit behind a cottage.

Can you clear drains in the old earthenware pipes under the cottages?

Yes. Much of the sewer here is glazed clay from the 1890s tram era, so we camera the line first, then clear with cutting heads or jetting rather than digging up gardens.

Why is the water pressure so poor in our back bathroom?

Many weatherboard cottages here were plumbed in galvanised steel that has furred solid inside over the decades. The fix is replacing the supply line back to the meter, not patching it.

Can you come the same day for a burst pipe or an overflowing toilet?

Same-day where the schedule allows, and emergencies like burst galvanised risers or a surcharging yard gully get priority. Ring early and we will tell you straight what the day looks like.

Do you work on the newer places along Hannell Street too?

We do. The former industrial land along Hannell Street carries newer builds beside the cottage core, and the run covers both, from flexi hose replacements to capping abandoned gas lines.

What areas around here do you cover?

The regular run takes in Islington, Maryville, Mayfield East, Carrington and Warabrook, plus Mayfield itself, so a job on one side of Throsby Creek rarely waits on travel.
